Native: Baja California, North West Mexico South of California.
Solitary, with a slightly glaucous body. It has red spines that are dense, stout also hooked. The flowers can be pale yellow to a deep orange with darker orange mid-stripes. It blooms in late summer, early fall also stays in flower for several weeks. Use very draining soil, water during the growing season. But allowed to dry before watering again also kept drier in Winter. Take note: it’s necessary to avoid wetting the bodies of these plants while they are in sunlight. A wet cactus in the sunlight can cause sun burning which can lead to many problems. It needs a bright exposure, part shade in summer.
